    Refurb and Reorg

It’s one of those things: something’s needing doing, but since it’s yours — and not a clients’ — it doesn’t get done.

Then it starts to annoy. Still, other priorities take precedent.

But then something happens. In my case, it was the installation of WordPress 7, which broke several things on the site. Which meant the itch finally got the scratch.

    The New Foreword, June 2026

The site’s undergone a major reorganization. It’s more focused, based almost exclusively around Foreword (which, deservedly, gets 90% of the site’s traffic). It features completely new style sheets, which mean new fonts, a new layout, and more.

Best of all, it’s based on modern code, which means it’s faster and has better compatibility with tablets and mobile devices — even if it’s still probably best viewed on a big monitor.

The photography sections got a bump, too. They’re now broken down into categories:

    • Regional Imagery, photography from selected cityscapes, rural scenes, landscapes, and architectural photographs from ten US states (plus several additional locations in the UK)
    • College Street, photography from colleges and universities
    • Maine Revisited, photography covering a ten-year span — 2008–2018 — of the great State of Maine, “the way life should be.” Includes items from the book of the same name, now sold out. And,
    • Debuting this fall: Frequency Shift, which is macro, detail, and abstract photography from the world of hi-end audio.
Vetrans Super(fortress), Georgia Vetrans State Park, Cordele, Georgia, 2018

No page was left untouched as part of this update. (In fact, check ’em out: use the menu at the top right.) It’s still a work in progress — there are wrinkles that’ll hopefully be smoothed out in the next few weeks, most likely including things I don’t yet know about. Kindly let me know of anything that doesn’t work for you.

However, it’s the end of the month, and I have to sort the dozens of saved pages, notes, and photos already set aside into this month’s Beautifully Briefed. (Which’ll be posted Tuesday.)

As always, thank you for visiting!

    Gallery Update: Mercer University, 2025

According to Google, at the corner of Coleman Avenue and Adams Street, in Macon, is home to Newton Hall — and more specifically, Mercer University Press.1Google is wrong: Mercer University Press isn’t actually on campus — they’re in a separate building nearer downtown. See this University Press Week blog tour post for more.

Mercer University (Newton Entrance), 1400 Coleman Ave.

Mercer one of more than 160 members of the Association of University Presses. I mention this because, a while back, I said regarding taking some photographs around the campus of Mercer University, “stay tuned.” In honor of AUP’s University Press Week, November 10–14, I’ve done just that.

Pi Kappa Phi Bell, Perhaps Overrung, Winship St.
University Center Entrance (from Adams St.)
Hawkins Arena Entrance #2, Adams St.
University Commons, Penfield Hall, Edgewood Ave.
    Mercer Softball (Bleachers), Sikes Field
Jack Tarver Library #2, 1501 Mercer University Dr,.

Taken during a number of visits over fifteen years, a total of 100 photographs now populate the Mercer University gallery. Enjoy.

  • Gallery Update: Milledgeville, Georgia

    Gallery Update: Milledgeville, Georgia

Spring has sprung here in Middle Georgia:

    Downtown Dogwood

Gerald and I took advantage of a warm and cloudless March day for a lengthy photostroll which started in Milledgeville — lunch — and wandered northeast, starting at the nearby O’Quinn Mill:

    Old O’Quinn Mill (Wheel)
Old O’Quinn Mill (Siding Detail #2)

The old mill building is situated on, natch, O’Quinn pond — a man-made addition to Town Creek:

There’s a dock and old farm buildings in the complex, which these days is a picturesque event venue:

We continued on to Sparta, then returned through Eatonton, stopping in both towns for photographs. (Updates coming tomorrow and Wednesday: stay tuned.)

Meanwhile, take a look at the updated Milledgeville gallery, now up to 100 photographs spanning the last twelve years. Enjoy!

    Updated Gallery: Milledgeville

The small city of Milledgeville, on the banks of the Oconee River in nearby Baldwin County, is a favorite for photography. In this case, Gerald and I stopped on our way home from Sandersville, and spent some time wandering the historic district.

Fall Color, First Presbyterian Church (#1), S. Wayne St.
(Extended) Weathervane, Old Courthouse Building, 201 W. Hancock St.

    I especially liked this gate:

Gate and Stairs (Going Up), 129 S. Wayne St.

We were these the day after (part of) the Deep Roots Festival, which meant some street decorations lingered:

    Oh, and happy Halloween:

See all my photographs from Milledgeville in the updated gallery. Thank you for visiting. See you in November!

    New Gallery: Vassar College

Many, many moons ago, my late sister attended Vassar College. I had an occasion to stay in Poughkeepsie, NY, where Vassar is located, and went over on a beautiful morning and spent some time wandering around with the Leica.

    Chapel Hall, Vassar
    Film, Vassar

It’s a beautiful campus; a mix of modern, mid-century, and classic architecture — with a little mid-century thrown in:

    Architecture mix, Vassar

For many years, Vassar was a women’s (-only) college, and it was nice to find the National Landmark observatory building — a reminder that even in the 1800’s, women were doing scientific research:

    The New England building:

An enjoyable visit, a beautiful, incredibly well-tended campus, and a tranquil late summer morning at a renowned college. I was delighted to visit, and pleased with the resulting photographs. See the rest here.

Memorial Day weekend brought what is likely the last of the spring-like weather to Middle Georgia, and while it lasted, I was out with the camera. This time, the beautiful, historic Mercer University campus here in Macon:

That building is from the 1800’s. The bear — and the building in the background — are not:

Had my black-and-white “classic camera” filters handy, too (same building in the background, FYI):

Thirty new photographs join the Mercer University gallery. Peruse, purchase, or just enjoy.

Visited Middle Georgia State University over the Memorial Day weekend, and have an updated look at campus:

The Wellness Center wasn’t even there last time I was there with a camera:

Take a look at the whole set here. Thanks!
