On WordPress, Zenfolio, and Design.

Well, so, here it is. The “new” GHdotcom.

I’ll be honest: it’s a compromise. WordPress uses PHP, which is currently — probably forever — over my head. Thus, for this very-badly-behind-the-times web designer, I turned to templates.

The one in use here, Cutline, is similar to what I want the “words” portion of the site to eventually look like — fairly simple, monochromatic, and in a supporting role for the images. It’s not perfect, and has been modified a little (hey, I still remember some stuff) to include my photos in the headers, updated copyright and text info at the bottom, and some other goodies.

WordPress is quite powerful, too, in that it allows you to build the sidebars on the fly, from within the WP application in your browser — no rewriting code. Sweet. Thus, with minimal HTML/PHP editing, a pretty decent-looking front end for the site.

The Zenfolio portion — anything in the browse and buy section, in other words — is also based on a template, called “Fine Art - White.” It’s from Zenfolio, and is being used because they only offer templates, no direct customization. (They say it’s coming soon. I believe them.)

The minimal colors of both templates, along with vaguely similar designs (okay, very vaguely) work pretty well together. For now, it’ll do.

Looking forward to some time in the near future — few weeks, few months, who knows — when both the front and back ends of the site will look just that much better. Meanwhile, don’t be surprised to see some details change here on the front page, as I (re)learn and tweak.

As always, thanks for stopping by.
