Another (Great) Detour

Another (Great) Detour

I’m working on the Garden Tour photographs this weekend, but couldn’t resist a dinner invitation from my good friends Miles and Trish. Before I knew it, there was a set of photographs ready to be uploaded.

Including several of the official “Magnolia Boy:”

Connor’s (Extreme) Close-Up

He likes to grab the camera and stick his face into the front of the lens, recognizing on some instinctual level that a part of him is preserved inside [for lack of a better term. —Ed]. Further, my rig isn’t some little, hand-held point-and-shoot — he can actually grab onto it and, believe me, he usually does.

After all, he knows that immediately after, the back of the camera features the resulting image, and seeing it pleases him. This despite not being able to talk. Smart boy. (Actually makes me hopeful about the next generations’ success, but that’s another post.)

In this instance, the D3 was wearing the 28mm Sigma macro* — enabling me to press the shutter release with the boy’s nose less than an inch away.

Awesome.

Speaking of which, for the second shoot in a row, a four-star (that’s .003% of the time, in 2008, at least) photograph:

Father-Son, May, 2009

Awesome!? Fracking fantastic.

However, Dan, Monica, and Connor were only a few hours’ back from vacation, and Connor literally crashed before our eyes. The last photograph (of his five) shows how tired he is, struggling between sleep and play.

Meanwhile, for those of you who were there, the in-joke of the night goes to this one:

Tee Light (and Sparkling Non-Alcohol)

Have to mention a paper cutout of a real place I’ve been. Did my best to bring a sense of St. Petersburg, Russia, to Macon:

St. Pete, in 3-D

Looked at this for a few minutes before deciding how to take the photograph. Very happy with the results; it’s paper, made real. Nice.

The genesis for the get-together was Chris Nylan’s return to Macon — and, shame, I don’t have a photograph of him on this occasion, either. [Sometimes, apparently, "a slightly different focus" means ... I suck. Sorry. —Ed.]

His dog, however…:

Pug #2 (Odie)

Last but very much not least, I’m always happy to add a new face to the photography collection. And, of course, anyone wearing one of Miles’ special real-hair mustaches is going to be featured:

Misplaced ’Stache

See the whole set here. (The link is the slideshow, such that you can enjoy large photos with captions.) Many thanks to Miles and Trish for … everything. You guys rock.

Please note: I’m going back to work on the Garden Tour photographs now; please stay tuned for that post tomorrow, Memorial Day. Hope you’re having a great holiday weekend.

*Technical note: This is a combo I don’t use often enough. The Sigma has many flaws, from focus hunting to a clutch I’m always accidentally triggering — but when it’s good, it effing rocks. The first photograph of C, where he’s right on top of the lens (literally), would not be possible with any other lens in my bag. We’ll call it, “The Close-In Special.”
