On Gardens … and a Derby

On Gardens … and a Derby

Enjoyed this Saturday on two fronts, starting with a tour of four of Macon’s gardens — taking, as usual, a slightly different focus:

Flowers with Paper Background

Shredded paper as mulch. Great recycling goin’ on here…!

Then, next door, caught one of those photographs — which also happens to include a [very tiny — Ed.] bit of self-portrait:

Tea, Flowers, and Reflections

More Macon gardens will be photographed tomorrow; before I could get past Magnolia and Orange streets today, however, it was time for a party — my second outing at the Thomasson’s Kentucky Derby get-together.

Which, this year, included a …:

European Beauty, Celebrated (in Macon, Georgia)

A reminder that some folks take the outcome of such races seriously:

Ten-Spot

Nice, for some at least, that a horse with 50-1 odds won tonight’s race.

Meanwhile, can’t neglect cuteness:

Derby Smile #1

Fantastic. Oh, and did I mention cute…?

Derby Smile #2

From the same little girl who scored one of the top photographs of 2008. Nice.

The gardens will be posted here; the Derby here. As always, thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated.

Next: More Macon gardens, then the balance of the First Friday and Derby photography. After that, another back post (or two…!) then perhaps something new. Stay tuned…!

  2. Awesome portrait of the boy, above, and some great portraits in your gallery, especially the girl jumping rope and the man holding his cup up (#17, currently). Well done. I’m glad the rain didn’t dampen the shoot.

  3. Giles – Terrific photos of the Derby Porch Party!
Thanks for taking wonderful pictures of of our friends and nieghbors from InTown, Macon and Atlanta.
You have of knack of capturing some of my favorite people and vistas. I like the way you use natural light and vary your focal length to draw attention to still life details and to highlight the personalities in your portraits.
Your non-obtrusive style makes for great shots of kids and grownup kids alike (and Beaudreaux too). I love the photo of the crowd watching the end of the race.
Thanks for recording the delicous food, the delightful company, the garden in bloom and some of the objects that make our house a home, but mainly thanks for catching the spirit of the day. And of course, you – as always- are a welcome guest.
    Thank you, Pam and Dick
