Plains, Americus, Andersonville, Preston, and Columbus, Georgia

Enjoyed a great photostroll with Gerald and Phillip last Saturday, starting with a quick stop in Preston, Georgia, followed by a longer-than-expected stop in Plains (home of President Jimmy Carter), Americus, and finally a shorter-than-expected stop in Andersonville. (We settled in just as they closed. Sheesh.)

It was especially interesting to visit the Carter visitor’s center and farm on the weekend of the inauguration. Including this, from President Carter’s visitor center — and his elementary classroom:

This, too, from President Carter’s boyhood farm — one of my favorite shots from the day:

Nice. (Note the icicles. It was cold that day.)

Meanwhile, also enjoyed nearby Americus, Georgia, even if they do close up lunch a little too early in the day for our tastes. Especially like this (typically-Giles) shot of some stonework:

Think Gerald got better shots of the historic hotel downtown. Fine by me — one of us got it!

As the afternoon waned, we moved on to Andersonville, the Civil War cemetery, a sobering yet beautiful place.

Tried my best to honor that with shots like this:

A bonus shot, too — from Preston, Georgia, on the way to Plains:

Good day. Thanks much to both Gerald and Phillip. (You, too, Autumn!)

Oh, one more — some good fishing along the Chatahoochee:

Don’t use the D3 with the 70-200 often. Not often enough, this photograph reminds me.

See all my Southwest Georgia shots here. Gerald’s are linked here. And Phillip’s Andersonville shots are here. Enjoy.

Coming soon: this week’s Cocktail Hour, a visit to Rose Hill with Gerald, and a visit with Dan and Monica Friday evening that resulted in a couple of good shots of the boy. Stay tuned!

  1. [...] 1/22/09: Giles posted his galleries: Andersonville, Americus, and Plains. And now he posted a blog entry. [...]

  2. Great stuff, man. Love the fisherman shot. Maybe I do need to consider a long telephoto…?
