Catching Up, Part Five: November Snapshots
Last — but certainly not least — comes the long-overdue “quickies” post. Except that I’ve decided to call “quickies” something else: “snapshots.”
Seems appropriate, given that this photographer draws a distinction between photography, the art of taking photographs, and snapshots, those quick-and-dirty, non-art-driven takes on a scene.
Thus, some “quick and dirty,” snapshot links:
- Sailing the Maine coast is my adult obsession dream. Taking this trip — and taking photographs along the way — is something I will do, sooner or later, no matter what.
- My friend Gerald is an editor of the Normal Mailer Society (and Review). How wonderful to bump into a collection of Mailer’s letters — good stuff.
- How interesting to see that Google has settled with book sellers — only to become a “bookseller.”
- On the subject of Google, booksellers, and publishing (online and “traditional”): this NYTimes article about the decline of “old media.” (I’m sure feeling it — some of my “old media” clients have simply gone away this fall. Sheesh.)
- Fascinating look behind the scenes at The Atlantic’s recent redesign.
- Waaaaay off topic: There’s a new Star Trek movie afoot. This jury’s still out — but you can bet I’ll actually go see this one, something I haven’t done (see a movie in a theater, I mean) in years.
- Life magazine recently released its archive of photography to Google … and it’s all online. Niiiiice.
Some on the good Mr. Obama:
- Behind-the-scenes photography from election night — and the Obamas. Happy to see just how calm and collected they were amongst the election chaos; good stuff.
- While we’re on the president-elect (can’t get enough of saying that…!), here are more great photographs from the campaign trail. (Keep clicking “show more images” to feed the need.)
- More on Obama: how the “O” came to be. Great, great logo — nice to see how it came to pass.
- Lastly, respectful of my good friend Calvin’s note on my election-day post, a reminder from the Washington Post that Obama’s not black.
And, the capper — some energy:
- This “slow current” water-power generation system seems very cool — “fraught with potential,” as they say. Develop it out already!
- What about using coffee grounds for biodiesel? Finally, a use for Starbucks…;)
Hope everyone is enjoying their Thanksgiving weekend. Next post later this coming week.
