2010: Welcome Home

2010: Welcome Home

We’re a month in already, and I still can’t believe it: 2010. Wow.

As the saying goes, it’s the “year we make contact.” Perhaps not with those from otherworldly places, but for me, it’s definitely the year I make contact … with my refurbished home.

Let me tell you: I’m glad to be here. In this home, in Macon, in 2010 — there’s nowhere I’d rather be.

As most of you know, I took the month of January away from the computer in an attempt to get my bearings after construction woes, backup and data woes, electrical problems, a bizarre situation with 911 hangups, and many other challenges. Many, many challenges.

I was partially successful. The construction, unbelievably, isn’t done quite yet, and the caulking, priming, and painting — that I’m doing, in a budget move — is taking longer than I’d hoped. Worse, I decided to tackle my tendencies to be a pack rat, and sorting through boxes that haven’t been opened in months or years is also proving a huge time-taker.

Nonetheless, some things are done: the photo database is now on multiple redundant drive units, my office has changed locations (and been completely cleaned out in the process), among others; I feel fortunate to count many, smaller victories over the disarray of the past few months.

My favorite photograph from the remodel (so far) is this one, from the early days:

Doorways #1 (Bathroom)

It captures not only the chaos that is remodeling, but also my favorite of the no-longer-there features of this house: the many doorways along the central axis.

However, it also represents the carefully-chosen vista set to replace it — one with a better termination than a dark cabinet, and one that doesn’t even require I go to the bathroom to enjoy! — which will debut along with the home’s public showing, early next month.

Thanks for your patience.

Meanwhile, a photograph from this year’s — and this kitchen’s — first gourmet meal:

Dinner “On the Island”

Up next: getting the network wiring right here in the house, painting the bedroom, starting in on the library setup, and … finally, some photography. Starting with New Year’s Eve (haven’t forgotten you, Betsy), then proceeding on to some of last year’s location photography, including Maine. Yeeeaaaaaaaayy!

Enjoy the 120+ photographs from the remodeling in this gallery. Stay tuned for more, from the house and from afield, soon — and, as always, thanks for stopping by.
